Mayorkun Shares How Davido Paved the Way for His Sony Music Africa Deal After Exiting DMW

Mayorkun Credits Davido for Sony Music Africa Deal, Teases New Album ‘Still The Mayor’
Nigerian music star Mayorkun has revealed that Davido played a crucial role in helping him land his deal with Sony Music Africa following his exit from DMW.
The ‘Holy Father’ crooner was signed to Davido Music Worldwide from 2016 to 2021. After parting ways with the label, Mayorkun went on to release his sophomore album, Back In Office, under Sony Music West Africa in October 2021.
In a recent interview with 3Music TV, Mayorkun expressed gratitude to Davido for facilitating the Sony deal, though he didn’t disclose specific details.
“Aside from having my label, I’m also with Sony Africa. Shout out to Davido for that as well—he facilitated the deal,” he said.
Mayorkun also announced that his highly anticipated third studio album, titled Still The Mayor, will be released on June 13. He described it as a follow-up to his previous projects and explained the thought behind the title.
“It’s not about claiming my position in the industry. It’s a sequel, and I wanted a title that would raise questions,” he said. “The title is also quite bold.”
The singer added that the upcoming album has been his “most challenging” project so far, pointing to delays caused by clearance processes and label formalities.
“Music isn’t what it used to be. There are more protocols now. But we’re finally done—we just didn’t want to get into trouble,” he explained.
